El Alamein memorial, Egypt
S. Cochrane
During my time working on Soviet ships in the late 1970's, I was lucky enough to take the opportunity to take the trip from Alexandria, along the 6o-mile coast highway to El Alamein.
The British Commonwealth cemetery and memorial is the
only green to be seen for miles. It was poignant to see the headstones
of the men from the 2nd Battalion Black Watch, men from my Father's Regiment.
Though the headstones are placed in regimental rows, the Earthly remains
of the fallen still lie on the battlefield. When the headstones are close
together, it denotes that these men were killed together and lie together
in the same battlefield grave.
